Series II. Schoolwork and Early Career -- 1929-1943 contains papers pertaining to Simon's high school education in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and to his undergraduate and doctoral work at the University of Chicago. Drafts of Administrative Behavior, the theses Simon expanded into an influential book, are collected here. Early organizational studies conducted at Chicago's International City Managers' Association and the Bureau of Public Administration at the University of California, Berkeley, are represented. Materials included are from Simon's high school years, including debating notes, English and Social Science papers, and science worksheets and charts. Materials relating to the Rockmarsh project include papers, charts, data, and maps. Undergraduate and doctoral studies materials from the University of Chicago include course materials, Ph.D. exams, papers, including "Administration of Public Recreation Facilities in Milwaukee," and drafts of his dissertation. ICMA materials include annual reports, correspondence, data, memoranda, papers on measurement standards in municipal government, reports, reprints, and drafts of talks given by Simon. BPA materials include the Simon-authored Manual of Police Records and Control, notes on a measurement study proposal, papers and drafts documenting BPA research, and progress reports. The series occupies 2 boxes (2.25 cu. ft.).
