Series II: New York University,
c. 1938-1996 [c. 1938-1941]. Papers concerning Professor Shull's
graduate work at New York University are housed in Box 1 and Oversize Box 22 and
are 0.5 linear feet in length. The material is arranged chronologically. The
bulk of the material from c. 1938-1941 is focused on his coursework and includes
class notes and laboratory experiment reports. Lantern slides of the graphic
material from his doctoral dissertation are included, as well as the 1941
commencement program for the university. The remainder of the material deals
with an informal reunion of his fellow physics graduate students in 1978, an
invited speech to the physics department in 1987, and an honorary doctorate that
helped to celebrate his receipt of the Nobel Prize. A photograph of the honorees
at the 1995 New York University Commencement shows Shull with Kitty Carlisle
Hart, Neil Diamond, Henry-Louis Gates, Jr., and Sidney Poitier.
